How to edit a PDF without uploading it
Sometimes you just need to mark up a PDF: add a note, highlight a line, draw an arrow, or cover something before sharing. PDFPrivy’s Edit PDF tool lets you place that content on top of your pages without uploading the file.
This is an experimental tool. It adds new content as a layer over your pages — it does not reflow or directly edit the existing PDF text. That distinction matters, so it is worth understanding before you start.
Steps
- Open the Edit PDF tool and choose your PDF.
- Pick a tool from the toolbar: text, shapes, highlight, line, arrow, or a cover box.
- Click or drag on the page to place your annotation, then adjust its position, size, or color.
- Use undo if you need to step back a change.
- Download the edited PDF when you are happy with it.
Your files stay in your browser
Your PDF is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers. No account is required.
Because the editing layer is rendered on your device, you can mark up confidential documents without sending them anywhere.
When to use this tool
- You want to annotate, highlight, or add notes and shapes on top of a PDF.
- You need to place a cover box over an area for a quick visual redaction in appearance only.
- You prefer not to upload the document to an online editor.
Limitations and honest caveats
- This tool adds content on top of the PDF. It does not directly edit existing PDF text — you cannot click an existing paragraph and retype it.
- Cover boxes are visual only and are not secure redaction. The content underneath may still exist in the file; do not rely on a cover box to hide sensitive data permanently.
- It is experimental: complex layouts, fonts, and precise placement may need a few adjustments.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I edit the existing text in my PDF?
- No. This tool adds new text and shapes on top of the page; it does not directly edit existing PDF text.
- Is a cover box a safe way to redact information?
- No. Cover boxes are visual only and are not secure redaction. The underlying content may still be present in the file.
- Is my file uploaded while I edit it?
- No. Editing happens locally in your browser and the file is not uploaded to our servers.
- Why is Edit PDF marked experimental?
- Placement and rendering of complex layouts are still being refined, so results may vary and need small adjustments.
